We are proud to announce the addition of German artist Steffen Diemer to the group of artists represented by the gallery.
His work will be exhibited for the first time in Italy at the Mia Photo Fair, Superstudio Più, Milan from 19th to 23rd March 2025 (Stand D 020).
Steffen Diemer's photographs are not grand theatres, but intimate black and white plays. His still lifes appear at first glance to be easily readable and accessible, only to gradually reveal further layers of meaning. The central theme of his work is the vulnerability of nature and, ultimately, of human beings.
Steffen Diemer primarily uses the 170-year-old process of wetplate collodion photography (ambrotype) for his works. The physicality of the works, exposed directly onto black glass, combined with their intimate size, invites the viewer to engage intensely with each image. This process emphasises the individuality and uniqueness of each photograph as an object of contemplation.
Steffen Diemer: "My photographic still lifes are characterised by asymmetry, simplicity, austerity, naturalness, mystery, freedom and tranquillity. I work very consistently with the wetplate collodion process, often taking days to produce a single work. But this deceleration is exactly what I want. I create unique photographic works exclusively on black glass 'made for me'".
We are pleased to announce our participation with works by Steffen Diemer, Jacques Pion and Alessandro Vicario in the 14th edition of MIA Photo Fair BNP Parisbas, Milan. This edition revolves around the theme “Dialogues”, exploring the power of photography as a tool for connection and exchange between cultures, languages, and perspectives.
We are grateful to Emanuela Mazzonis for selecting us, along with 11 other galleries, for the 'Reportage beyond reportage' section she curated. This section takes viewers on a visual journey that reaffirms photography's power not just as a tool of documentation, but as a reflection on the human-nature relationship, memory, identity and change.
We are also delighted that Alessandra Calò's The Garden's Tale has been shortlisted for the IRINOX Save the Food award, under the curatorship of Claudio Composti.
Finally, Lab 1930. Fotografia contemporanea is also taking part in MIA OFF, the city event dedicated to promoting exhibition spaces, galleries and artists' studios in Milan.
The exhibition χθόνιος | Chthonic by Alessandra Calò can be visited during the opening days of the fair, including Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd, from 10 am to 6 pm by appointment only (via Mantova 21, Milan).
